Why is a dentist treating obstructive sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a medical disease. Shouldn't I go to my primary care or a sleep physician to seek alternative methods to treat my apnea?
• There are many patients who are unable to tolerate CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy.
• Surgical procedures have the potential risks of pain, problems with swallowing, change in your voice, failure to cure sleep apnea and time off from work to name a few.
• The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends an oral device for the treatment of mild to moderate sleep apnea for those patients who are CPAP intolerant.
Oral devices are a non-surgical approach to reduce or eliminate the apnea occurrences. Who better than a dentist who is familiar and comfortable with the mouth, the teeth, the joints and the bite to fabricate, fit and adjust the device?
The oral appliance of choice in our office is The Full Breath Solution.
